Ask a Dietitian

"Diana, just a quick heads up to let you know we are still using your cookbook and the guys will often be heard saying what would Diana say about this or that....really good feed back... I made your potato salad and the oriental coleslaw on Sat. for a family luncheon and had rave reviews so thanks again."

Y2K Pantry Planning
As seen on BCTV November 30/99
Whether you’re planning for Y2K problems, an earthquake or simply weather conditions that leave you at home for a few days, keeping a good supply of food in the pantry is a wise idea. Of course if you have power, keep your fridge and freezer stocked with lean meats, vegetables and fruits.
If you’re depending on non-perishables only, plan for a water supply of at least 2 litres per person per day.
Stock foods from the 4 major food groups:
- For protein: canned tuna and salmon, nuts, peanut butter or canned beans.
- For milk products: skim milk powder, tetra pak soy milk and small foil-wrapped cheese cubes.
- For fruits and vegetables: canned vegetables and fruits, canned or bottled juices, dried fruits such as figs, cranberries, raisins, prunes, etc.
- For grain products: cereal, crackers, energy bars, granola bars, cookies like gingersnaps, graham crackers, arrowroot or oatmeal.
In the event of a serious crisis, it would be important emotionally to have some “fun” items in stock too such as chocolate bars, licorice, sesame snaps, cookies or potato chips. These items offer little nutritional value but may bring psychological comfort in tough times.
