"Diana, just a quick heads up to let you know we are still using your cookbook and the guys will often be heard saying what would Diana say about this or that....really good feed back... I made your potato salad and the oriental coleslaw on Sat. for a family luncheon and had rave reviews so thanks again."

NUTRITION TRENDS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM

The field of nutrition has exploded in the past few years and will continue to boom well into the new millennium. Five big trends I predict we will hear much more follow:

(1) Functional Foods/Nutraceuticals and the whole issue of Supplementation
Already we are seeing foods like calcium-fortified orange juice and soy products. We will continue to see our food supply expand with fortified foods and even see foods that are marketed to have healing properties such as a soup enhanced with vitamin C and echinacea to help heal a cold. The supplement industry will continue to boom as people realize their busy lifestyle is leaving them under nourished and missing out on key nutrients.

(2) Calcium
We know the critical role this nutrient plays in the prevention of the crippling bone disorder osteoporosis. This issue will become increasingly important. We will also hear more about the critical role calcium plays in the prevention of bowel diseases and even weight problems.

(3) The Role of Stress in Weight Management
Science and medicine have established what is required with diet, exercise and even drugs to facilitate weight loss. Less is known about the connection between stress, hormones and weight. I predict we will gain new insight into this area.

(4) Genetically Engineered Foods
Already a hot and politically-sensitive topic, the area of gene alteration as it applies to enhancing the food supply will expand. More questions and issues will arise in regards to the safety and ethical aspects of this process.

(5) Grocery Shopping From Home
Perhaps this won’t become big in the year 2000, but in the near future we will see such options as being able to order our groceries off our TV screen or computer monitor by simply touching the items we want. New refrigerators will become available that can scan the UPC code of foods keeping an inventory of what?s in your fridge, reminding you when foods expire and telling you when you need to replace items. Pretty neat stuff to watch out for.

Happy New Year to everyone and all the best for a happy, prosperous and healthy year! May peace of mind be a reality for everyone!
