CAN YOU PASS THE SUMMER FOOD SAFETY QUIZ?
Choose the answer that best describes your household, whether or not you are the primary food handler.
1. The last time I barbecued hamburgers, chicken breast or sausages I:
-
tested them with a thermometer to ensure they were cooked to a safe temperature.
-
knew they were done by the way they looked.
-
overcooked them to make sure they were done.
2. When I serve perishable foods outdoors in hot weather I:
-
make sure they are not left unrefrigerated for more than 1 hour
-
refrigerate them within 3 hours.

refrigerate them whenever I get around to it.
3. When eating outdoors I:

serve foods in uncovered bowls and platters.
-
cover all foods to ensure that flies don’t land on them.

keep an eye on the foods and shoo away flies with a fly swatter.

efilling the cooler with frozen ice packs as needed to keep meat and other perishable food at 4°C (40°F) or less.

rinse my hands with water before eating or food preparation.

wash my hands with soap and hot water or if not available, use disposable wipes before eating or food preparation
6. When thawing meat for the barbecue I:

leave it on the counter or in the sink until thawed
-
thaw it overnight in the refrigerator
-
thaw it in the microwave
7. Before cutting into fruit such as cantaloupe and watermelon I:
-
rinse it with cold water.
-
wash and scrub it with hot water using a clean produce brush.
-
cut into it without washing if the skin looks clean.
